Chunky Buffalo Plaid Crochet Stocking Free Pattern

Plaid shirts… flannel PJs and sheets… plaid Christmas décor… there’s just something about plaid that gives me a warm cozy feeling. Maybe it is because as soon as the weather starts to turn cooler, everyone switches to a wardrobe full of over-sized plaid flannel shirts!

Once you get used to the plaid pattern, these stockings work up so fast thanks to the super bulky yarn and huge crochet hook! I used Lion Brand Hometown USA in Oakland Black, Napa Valley Pinot and Tampa Spice. Add a couple of faux fur poms and a customized name tag and these stockings make the perfect family gift.

Level: Intermediate

Stitches Used:
Double Crochet (DC)
Single Crochet (SC)
Chain (Ch)

Materials:
Lion Brand Hometown USA- 2 rolls Black, 1 each of Napa Valley Pinot and Tampa Spice OR Super Bulky weight (6) yarn of your choice
Size M and size N crochet hooks
Yarn needle
Scissors
2 small faux fur Pom Poms (optional)

Finished Size: 18” top to bottom, 7.5” width

Pattern Notes:

• Chain 2 at the beginning of a round counts as 1 double crochet
• Change colors by finishing the last yarn over of a DC in the old color, with the new color. This will make neater looking blocks
• Except where the pattern says otherwise, carry the yarn that you are not using along under your DC stitches so you do not see the yarn on the inside of the stocking

Cuff

With M hook and color A, Ch 9.
1. SC in second chain from hook, and each stitch across. Ch 1, turn. (8)
2-32: SC in back loop only in each stitch across. Ch 1, turn.

Without fastening off, fold piece in half and slip stitch up the short side.
DO NOT TURN RIGHT-SIDE OUT.

When the stocking is finished, you will fold this cuff down, which will make the seems go inside where you won’t see it. If you turn this right side out now, the seem will show on your finished stocking.

Foot

Count 6 stitches in from the left side of the heel and join color B with a slip stitch. Ch 2.

You will now continue with plaid pattern

1. DC 2, changing to color C with final yarn over of 2nd DC. 3 DC in color C, with the last DC being placed in the last stitch of the heel. Switch to color B and continue to DC (following plaid pattern) around the leg portion of the stocking, until you reach the heel on the other side. When you reach the heel there will be 6 stitches remaining. Place 3 DC in color B, then 3 DC in color C, switching to color A in final stitch.

NOTE: When crocheting on either side of the heel, you may need to pull the yarn you are carrying under your stitches extra tight, to close up gaps next to the heel. If you still have gaps or holes here, you can use the yarn ends inside the stocking to sew them up.

2-5: Repeat rows 2 and 3 from Leg section until you have a total of 5 plaid rows below the heel. In your final DC of the 5th round, switch to color A. Slip stitch to top of Ch 2. Fasten off Colors B and C.

Toe

1. Ch 1. SC around (30).

SC into slip stitch from previous round. Place stitch marker. SC 3, SC2tog. *SC 4, SC2tog* around, working in continuous rounds until you have 14 stitches remaining. You will no longer count rounds. Just keep repeating *SC 4, SC2tog* until you have 14 stitches left.

SC2tog around until you have 7 stitches remaining (this should be one time around). Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing the toe shut. Turn stocking inside out. Sew toe closed, and weave in all ends, being sure to check the areas where the heal meets the rest of the stocking, as there may be holes to sew shut.

Hanging Loop Option A - Faux fur Pom Poms

With color A and M hook, tightly chain 55 (or until your chain is about 20 inches long). Fasten off. Fold chain in half unevenly (make one end 2-3 inches longer than the other)

Capture14.PNG

With cuff folded down, insert the folded end of the chain through the top of the cuff (on the right side, aligned with the heel). Do this by using your crochet hook to pull the chain through 2 of the double crochets in the all black row.

Capture15.PNG
Capture16.PNG

Pull the chain so the loop is about an inch tall. Then tie a tight knot to hold the loop in this position. Attach faux fur Poms to chain ends.

Hanging Loop Option B - No Pom Poms

With color A and M hook, join with a slip stitch to the top of cuff (with cuff folded down you’ll be slip stitching into the all black double crochet row), aligned with heel. See pictures on previous page in the Pom Pom option for placement.

Ch 8. Slip stitch to the next stitch next to your first slip stitch.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
