Chunky Knit Christmas Stocking
Christmas knitting has begun! If you are anything like me you have a long list of presents you want to knit and time is ticking. These chunky knit stockings are so easy and quick to knit. Add pom-poms, embellishments or name tags to make them more personalized for the recipient.
I love making handmade stockings and filling them with goodies and giving them as gifts for Christmas,
Supplies:
US 11 (8.0mm) 16 inch circular knitting needles
Super Bulky Yarn of choice, I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick
Yarn Needle
Stitch Marker
OPTIONAL US 11 (8.0mm) double pointed knitting needles for the toe portion
Pattern Notes:
Stocking is knit in the round from the cuff to the toe. Heel flap is knit flat across knitting back and forth while other stitches stay on the needle unworked.
Advanced beginner with knowledge of circular knitting and decreases.
Stocking 6 1/4 in. wide, cuff to heel 15 in., heel to toe 10 in.
Gauge is 9 stitches x 14 rows for 4 inch x 4 inch square.
Abbreviations:
K - Knit P - Purl rep - Repeat sts - Stitches
K2tog - Knit 2 stitches together P2tog - Purl 2 stitches together
Sl1 - Slip one stitch as if to purl
SSK - Slip 2 stitches as if to knit and then knit those 2 stitches together
Pattern:
Cast on 28 sts. Join in the round taking care not to twist stitches and place stitch marker.
Rounds 1-6: (K1, P1) rep to end of round
Rounds 7-36: Knit
Heel Flap:
You will now be knitting back and forth flat across 14 stitches to create the heel flap.
Row 37: K7 and turn
Row 38: Sl1, P13 and turn
Row 39: Sl1, K13 and turn
Rows 40-49: Repeat rows 38 & 39 five more times
Row 50: Sl1, P7, P2tog, P1 and turn (13 sts.)
Row 51: Sl1, K3, SSK, K1 and turn (12 sts.)
Row 52: Sl1, P4, P2tog, P1 and turn (11 sts.)
Row 53: Sl1, K5, SSK, K1 and turn (10 sts.)
Row 54: Sl1, P6, P2tog and turn (9 sts.)
Row 55: Sl1, K6, SSK (8 sts.)
Pick up and knit 7 stitches along the side of slipped stitches of the heel flap. Continue knitting stitches and removing marker when you come to it. When you reach the other side of the heel flap, pick up and knit 7 stitches. Knit 4 stitches and place stitch marker to mark the new beginning of the round. You will now have a total of 36 stitches and be working in the round again for the remainder of the stocking.
Foot Gusset:
Round 56: Knit
Round 57: K10, K2tog, K12, SSK, knit to the end of the round (34 sts.)
Round 58: Knit
Round 59: K9, K2tog, K12, SSK, knit to the end of the round (32 sts.)
Round 60: Knit
Round 61: K8, K2tog, K12, SSK, knit to the end of the round (30 sts.)
Round 62: Knit
Round 63: K7, K2tog, K12, SSK, knit to the end of the round (28 sts.)
Rounds 64-73: Knit
Toe:
For the toe decreases I used the circular needle until the stocking was completed. If you feel more comfortable working with double pointed needles, you may switch at this point.
Round 74: K5, K2tog, SSK, K10, K2tog, SSK, knit to the end of the round (24 sts.)
Round 75: Knit
Round 76: K4, K2tog, SSK, K8, K2to, SSK, knit to the end of the round (20 sts.)
Round 77: Knit
Round 78: K3, K2tog, SSK, K6, K2tog, SSK, knit to the end of the round (16 sts.)
Round 79: Knit
Round 80: K2, K3tog, SSK, K4, K2tog, SSK, knit to the end of the round (12 sts.)
Round 81: K1, K2tog, SSK, K2, K2tog, SSK, knit to the end of the round (8 sts.)
Cut yarn and pull through remaining loops, pull tight and weave in ends. I used the yarn tail at the cuff of the stocking to make the loop to hang the stocking up.
